It might not surprise you to know that there are a ton of edible plants in Alabama. Some I’ve tried before and some I’m just learning are edible. Here is a list of some of my favorites, along with a few I’m just learning about.
There’s been a tragedy. My dad’s Mallard hen abandoned her nest. There were 11 eggs under her and they were all doing well a few days ago when I candled them while she was off the nest. They were doing so well that I almost had an early hatcher. My best guess is that something ran her off the nest or otherwise scared her. We had some pretty cool temps last night, so by the time I got to them this afternoon it was too late. Continue reading

If you look at a picture of me, you might think it has something to do with the way I look. No, that’s not it. I was actually thinking of the front yard when I came up with that name. There are two big pecan trees (a mahan and a paper hull) in the front year. I get shade from them nearly year round. Hence Dark Acre. Continue reading
